10 Foods High in Vitamin C That You Probably Aren’t Eating Enough Of!

The antioxidant vitamin c is an essential vitamin for health that you can actually get a good supply from readily available foods. So here’s the list, with a brief history of the food followed up by the vitamin c content and daily value (DV).

1. Kiwi (kiwifruit)-This fruit originally named Yang Tao was brought from China to New Zealand by missionaries and later renamed Chinese Gooseberries, it wasn’t until 1961 that they were brought to the US and named Kiwi. This fuzz ball of a fruit tops the list of foods high in vitamin c with more than its equal amount over an orange, over 80% of this fruit is loaded with vitamin c.

2. Turnips-The red turnip is a root grown vegetable that belongs to the  Brassicaceae family that includes cabbage, kale, brussel-sprouts. They were consumed in the ancient Greek and Roman times and were considered a staple food; it’s not surprising why because of the the antioxidant and nutrients found in turnips. The turnip has 21mg or 35% of DV (daily value) of vitamin C per 100 g, or a medium sized turnip.

3. Peas (Mange Tout) - One of the first crops recognized to be cultivated by humans thousands of years ago peas are cultivated around the world. This part of the legume family is surprisingly healthy, we don’t normally consider peas to be such a health loaded veggie or superfood, but it is.

Normally peas are sold as raw fresh vegetables and cooked, as opposed to the other legumes such as beans and chickpeas that are sold dry and cooked. Peas have 58mg of c per 1 cup of peas (145g), making them vitamin c heavy, they are over 20% the DV of vitamin c according the USDA.

4. Papaya - This fruit is believed to have been discovered on the coast of Central America, the papaya or papaya ambapaya was cultivated by the Indians in Mexico before the 1500s. In the 20th century they were brought to Hawaii and cultivated since the 1920s. Papayas are loaded with vitamin c over 200% of the recommended DV. They are an excellent source of vitamin c.

5. Kale - This dark leafy green vegetable is touted for the nutrients it holds. Kale is believed to have originated in Asia Minor around 600bc and brought to Europe.

There are several variants of kale including the more popular ornamental and dinosaur kale, ornamental kale was used in house plants as the name suggests. Kale is a highly nutritious and dense veggie that is relatively low in calories and high in vitamin c with 80mg of c per 1 cup of chopped Kale, which is over 70% of the DV.

6. Camu Camu - This fruit which looks like the cross of an apple and a cherry is high in c. Found in Brazil and Peru the  myrciaria dubia is the botanical name for camu camu. It has over 50 times more vitamin c than an orange, more than 300% of the DV of c per half of a table spoon.

7. Goji Berries - This bright red/orange berry looks like a raisin when dried. It is known as the wolf berry and its botanical name is Lycium Barbarum. The Goji may have been consumed over 3000 years ago in china. They have more vitamin C per weight than any other fruit.

8 .Green bell pepper - Bell peppers are one of the oldest known vegetables on the list that was originally discovered over 8500 years ago in South and Central American then Columbus bought this veggie to Europe before the 1500s and they were used as a spice. 1 cup of bell peppers is equal to over 100% of the DV of vitamin c.

9. Cauliflower - Originally grown in Asia this vegetable dates back from 6th century B.C. and has been noted as a food source from Spain to Syria. Cauliflower is actually a flower that has not been developed yet. It looks like a white version of broccoli and is low in calories and very nutritious. The vitamin c content in cauliflower is over 77% of DV per 100g .

10. Brussels sprouts - They were believed to have originated in Italy and the first large cultivation of Brussel sprouts came from Belgium which comes from the name brussel. They are very high in vitamin c with over 74mg per 1 cup.  This is over 100%DV of vitamin c.
